What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine as practiced at the WellBeing Centre Galway is a holistic system of healing that addresses the underlying condition as well as the presenting symptoms.
Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world.

Originating in China more than 5,000 years ago, Acupuncture began to become better known in the United States

 in the early 1970's.
The term acupuncture indicates a procedure whereby incredibly thin needles are inserted into specific points

located on energetic meridians or "channels" which cover the human body.

What is moxabustion?
Moxabustion is a technique using a dried herb moxa (Artemesia Vulgaris), it is burned above the skin

at specific acupuncture points. Moxabustion therapy is excellent for chronic pain conditions as it promotes circulation,

warms and activates the Chi and increases a persons overall energy levels.

Most people find warming moxabustion therapy quite pleasant, especially when the winter months

cause an increase in joint pain or for those suffering from symptoms of colds and flu.

What is Electro Acupuncture?

Electro Acupuncture stimulates the body's healing processes by sending electrical impulses through the channels, muscles

and nerves. Electrical stimulation is most commonly associated with pain management as it promotes the release

of endogenous neurotransmitters such as beta-endorphin, a natural analgesic.

Electro Acupuncture can be effective for treating rheumatic and arthritic conditions, channel stagnation and musculoskeletal

trauma.

There are two main applications of electrotherapy; electro acupuncture (EA) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

(TENS).Electro acupuncture relies on the transmission of an electric current through acupuncture needles where TENS, a non

invasive technique, uses surface electrode pads with a conductor gel placed on the skin.

What Acupuncture Treats

Since acupuncture promotes the body's natural healing ability, many conditions can be treated. It is also a

comprehensive system of preventative health care and maintenance. The effectiveness of acupuncture and TCM is well documented. Throughout its past history, and in present ongoing practice, acupuncture has established a solid reputation

as a system of medical health care that works.
